The M.B.A. Association (Mentoring, Basketball, Academy)

“We are here to empower each young person to self exam, self assess their hidden talents and teach them to transfer these skills into their lives to reach their true potential:-through one to one/group mentoring Basketball skills, life coaching, health, fitness, dancing and cheering skills”

In his work on management and organisational behaviour Mullins, (2005, p150) suggest that and organisation’s mission statement is a vision which sets a particular purpose and a specific direction for the organisation. A mission statement can alter in length and can differ in specific or general content; this is all according to the businesses objectives.
Mullins, (2005)

The authors work on a mission statement Radtke (2005, online) suggests that an organisation has a mission, a purpose a reason for being. Often a mission is why the organisation was first developed.
Radtke (2005)
The organisation’s objectives;

The organisation works in partnership with schools & Colleges,Community and Statutory agencies and adults to build self-esteem, give support/encouragement to young people and develop their motivation to become successful learners. We endeavour to provide a fun and enjoyable learning experience, which aims to;

 Changing the mind set of the individual and increasing a positive state mind
 Remind young persons that learning is important
 Stress the importance of how to appreciate
 Learn how to relate to one another
 Develop tolerance and respect for differences
 Develop reasoning skills
 Develop individual ball skills, or cheerleading skills
 Encourage team work
 Learn that team is important; T-Together E-Everybody A-Achieves M-More

Developing key skills through Basketball/Cheerleading activities with a teach to teach approach, the intention being that young people will transfer their learning skills into the classroom, work place or community, raising their achievement and enhancing their ability = High Self Esteem. Our long term intentions are for the young people to transfer their learning experience, so they are confident enough to play local/national league, study for a National Diploma or equivalent, ultimately going to college/high school in Europe or America.

In his work on management and organisational behaviour Mullins, (2005, p152) suggest that objectives in an organisation are set out specifically the goals of the organisation, the aims to be achieved and the desired end result the organisation is trying to achieve.
Mullins, (2005)

In there work on a businesses objectives Defra (2002 online) suggest that before starting the complex task of business planning, it is necessary to be as clear as possible about what it is you want to do. This is always not as simple as it seems. Some business, objectives or activities are simpler to define.
Defra (2002)

The M.B.A. organisation strategy is worked through a number of Programmes, schemes and weekly activities in order to achieve the organisation selected Mission. There are a number of basketball programmes, which are set up through out each year for the younger generation under 18’s to get involved in. The biggest scheme the M.B.A. has to offer is the M.B.A. summer basketball camp, which commences in the
early month of August each year. This camp has taken place each year locally in the district of Hertfordshire at the Sports leisure centre of Hitchin Boys School. It lasts for
a week and is a high quality basketball camp teaching the vital fundamentals, skills and attributes needed in the sport of basketball and also this camp provides the younger player with a positive attitude working together in a stable environment. This camp is around £50 to £60 for the week and the each session starts from 10.00 a.m. to 4.00 p.m.
2006 will see a new approach by the MBA who in partnership
with Stevenage leisure limited are offering 3 hours of basketball or 3 hours of cheerleading coaching Monday to Friday for the entire 6 weeks of the summer holidays. This will take part at Stevenage Leisure Centre from 10am - 1pm Cheerleading and 1pm - 4pm Basketball from 24th July until 1st September and costs £5.00 for 3 hours.
There are other schemes the organisation considers through out the year such as small basketball / cheerleading project schemes within the Christmas and Easter holiday break. These schemes take place again locally at Parks, Sports pavilions and Leisure Centres in Stevenage, the aim of these project is to get the under 18’s active in sport during the holiday period again the project aids the organisations Mission statement i.e. develop one’s basketball/ cheerleading skills and talent. Also the project scheme helps youngsters to avoid potential trouble certain vulnerable children may face during the holiday period. The organisation uses the sport of basketball and cheerleading sometimes other sports are considered within this project scheme depending on the number of children participating in the scheme for each day. This holiday project last again for three days but can change every year in duration. Each session starts at 10.00 a.m. and lasts until 2.00p.m. and the session is free to participate.

Generally through out the year the M.B.A. offers children to join the club and participate in the training sessions every week which is held on Mondays and Thursdays afternoons for 2 hours. It starts at 4.30 p.m. until 6.30 p.m. and the admission fee is three pounds to participate. These sessions are basketball training sessions for the under 18’s, under 16’s M.B.A. Cougars team, and also the session is for any other children who are generally interested in participating in the basketball session. The session focuses heavily on coaching key basketball skills, fundamentals and team play which all aids one’s talent and potential to develop their basketball game referring back to the organisations Mission statement. Also the session helps the child to build on their character through interaction with players, team members, coaches/staff etc. Again the session creates a warm atmosphere that is stable and friendly increasing the basketball enjoyment of the individual.

The cheerleading has 3 open community clubs. They run on Tuesdays at Great Ashby for ages 5-11 from 6-8pm, Tuesdays at St Nicholas Sports Pavilion for ages 11-15 from 7pm - 9pm and Wednesdays at Stevenage Leisure Centre for ages 15-21. It costs £3.00 per session and the young people get to learn and practise new routines and stunts in a safe and warm environment.

In his work on management and organisational behaviour Mullins, (2005, p157) suggest that the strategy of a business is the plans and actions for its implementation without a strategy it becomes more difficult for expanding organisations to co-ordination action with entrepreneur effort.
Mullins, (2005)

An analysis of the external macro-environment that affects all buisnesses

PEST analysis

In his work on management and in particular the PEST Analysis Recktiles, (2001, online) suggest that the PEST analysis has proven to be flexible and easy to understand tool in planing. The PEST analysis stands for political, economical, socio-cultural, and technological. These factors differ depending on the industry. These factors should be analysed differently and separately.
Recktiles, (2001)

In his work on marketing and in particular on the PEST Analysis Hart, (2000, online) suggest that the PEST analysis is very important that an organisation considers its environment before beginning the marketing process. Environmental analysis should be continuos and feed all aspects of planning.
Hart, (2000)
A PEST Analysis on the M.B.A. organisation

Political- The M.B.A. organisation abides by all of the government’s laws, rules and regulations. All factors that contribute to legislation are continuously checked, in order to abide by the governments law.

Economical-All financial factors within the organisation’s business are taken into account and continuously checked to keep up with the control of the business economical aspects.

Social Cultural- The organisation understands external factors that could deliver a positive or a negative outcome. The organisation considers keeping up to date with all external factors that contribute to how the business functions. For example demographic factors and particular populated areas that are considered by the M.B.A in order to export their skills.

Technological- The organisation considers developments in technology each year to maintain the image trend of the business. New equipment is considered each year and the quality of the equipment is also taken into account, such as new ultimate indoor basketballs are now currently made by ‘Baiden’ previously the basketball were made by ‘Spalding’ the organisation has considered this factor to give the club that competitive edge and are currently in 2006 using this brand for their basketballs. Also the club uses the internet to promote the club. This aids the M.B.A. organisation because players and staff can interact via email and also provides the internet helps again boost the clubs image effectively in order to promote basketball participation. Lastly the club is now reflecting on advertising previous M.B.A. team games. These games will be promoted on the internet for consumers to buy using the Paypal mechanism, but this is still in the process of future developments for the organisation.

An analysis of its core competencies

In his work on core competencies Rigby, (1993, online) suggest that the idea of the core competencies is a deep proficiency that enables a company to deliver unique value to customers.
Rigby, (1993)

The core competencies of the M.B.A. basketball organisation, maintains a good standard of basketball coaching. The organisation uses strong aims to improve one’s basketball performance and attitude. This aids the individual so that he or she can excel for the future with a positive life style and a better basketball performance. Using a strong coaching staff in the organisation, who have all achieved good coaching qualifications and who are also well experienced in the field of coaching aids the organisations reputation. It also provides positive interaction with the participants attending the club. This all positively affects the nature of the club and the organisation. Over the years the organisation has developed and continues to grow since it began in 1999.

In his work on management and organisational behaviour Mullins, (2005, p158) suggest that the SWOT Analysis provides convient headings under which to study an organisation in its environmental setting and may provide a basis for decision-making and problem solving.
Mullins, (2005)

In his work on marketing Hart, (2000, online), suggest that the SWOT Analysis is a tool for auditing an organisation and its environment.
